Every service visit at Hillside Auto Repair includes a full digital inspection - and instead of a clipboard you never see, the results arrive on your phone as a digital report with photos and video of your own car. This page explains exactly what that report looks like, how to read it, and how to use it to approve only the work you want. (For the story of why we work this way, see our digital vehicle inspections page.)
What arrives on your phone
While your car is on the lift, our technicians photograph and record what they find during the vehicle inspection. Before we recommend anything, you get a text with a link - tap it and the full report opens right in your browser. No app to download, no login to remember. The photos are of your car, taken minutes earlier in our shop, so you can zoom in on your actual brake pads, your actual tires, your actual engine bay.
The anatomy of the report
The report walks through your vehicle system by system: brakes, tires, fluids, belts and hoses, battery and charging, suspension and steering, lights, and filters. Each line item carries three things:
- A finding in plain language. Not "posterior friction material marginal" - just "rear brake pads are getting thin."
- The evidence. A photo or short video of the part in question, plus measurements where they matter: brake pad thickness, tire tread depth, battery health.
- A priority rating. A simple color that tells you how urgent it is - explained below.
What the colors mean
The ratings are the heart of the report, and we keep them honest:
- Green - checked and good. We looked, it passed, nothing to do. A healthy car should have a page full of these, and yours often will.
- Yellow - plan for it. Yellow means the part still works, but it is wearing out and will need replacing before long. Nothing to do today. It's your budgeting tool - ask us how long it can reasonably wait, and we'll tell you straight.
- Red - needs attention now. Reserved for safety issues and failures in progress. If something's red, the photo will show you why, and we'll walk you through it before anything else happens.
One thing you'll notice quickly: we don't inflate yellows into reds. The whole system only works if the colors stay truthful - that is what makes the report worth reading.
From report to approval - you stay in control
Alongside the report you'll get an estimate broken out item by item. Approve the whole list, approve part of it, or hold off - each line is your call, made right from your phone. Nothing proceeds without your OK, and if you'd rather talk it through, call us at (310) 373-7676 and we'll go photo by photo together. Repairs based on our own diagnosis are backed by our 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty.
A quick example
Say your oil change inspection turns up three findings: front brake pads at a healthy thickness (green - nothing to do), rear pads getting thin with a photo showing the wear (yellow - plan for a visit in the coming months), and a battery that fails its load test (red - with the tester reading in the photo). You approve the battery today, budget for the rear brakes, and skip anything else entirely. That is the report doing its job: a mechanic with decades of experience shows you the evidence, and you decide from facts instead of guesswork.
Your car's health history, visit after visit
Reports don't vanish after you close them. Each free inspection builds a running record of your vehicle's health - so we can show you how much tread the tires lost since last spring, or that the small oil seep hasn't grown since we first photographed it. Over time, that history is what turns car care from guesswork into a plan, and it follows the car: it's a quiet asset when you sell, and a smart thing to ask for when you're buying (that's the idea behind our pre-purchase inspection, too).
Common questions
- Do I need to be tech-savvy? If you can open a text message, you can read the report. And we're always glad to walk through it by phone instead.
- Is the inspection really free? Yes - the digital inspection with photos is included with oil changes, repairs, and maintenance visits alike. It's part of how we do business, not an add-on.
- What if I want a copy? Ask and we'll send it however you like. The link doesn't expire the moment you leave the lot.
The short version: our digital inspection report shows you what we see, tells you what it means, and leaves every decision where it belongs - with you. Book a visit and read one for yourself.
