How your car's A/C works
Your A/C doesn't make cold air - it removes heat. Refrigerant cycles through a loop: the compressor pressurizes it, the condenser up front sheds its heat to outside air, and the evaporator inside the dash absorbs heat from your cabin as the blower pushes air across it. Every part of that loop - plus its sensors, switches, and seals - has to cooperate. When one link fails, the whole system feels it.
Signs your A/C needs service
- Air isn't cooling - most often low refrigerant from a leak, a failing compressor, or an electrical fault
- Weak airflow - blower motor, cabin air filter, or ductwork issues
- Musty or odd smells - moisture or mildew at the evaporator, or a filter overdue for replacement
- Noises when the A/C engages - rattles or squeals often mean the compressor or its clutch is crying for help
- Water inside the cabin - a blocked evaporator drain doing the wrong thing
A/C recharge - done right
An A/C recharge restores refrigerant to the exact factory charge - but refrigerant doesn't get "used up," so a low system means a leak somewhere. We find and fix the leak first, then recharge with precision equipment and verify the vent temperatures. A parking-lot top-off can mask a leak for a month; a proper repair keeps you cold all summer.
Compressor repair and replacement
The compressor is the heart of the system and its most expensive component. When it fails, we diagnose why (electrical, clutch, internal wear, or contamination), flush the system properly, and replace it with quality parts - because a new compressor installed into a contaminated system fails again fast. That is why the system has to be cleaned out before the new part goes in.
While your A/C is down: staying cool
Waiting on your appointment? A sunshade, shaded parking, and cracking the windows to vent built-up heat before you drive all take real degrees off the cabin. But don't wait long - A/C problems, especially leaks, only grow in the heat.
Three A/C facts that save money: it is a sealed system, so 'low' means a leak - top-offs without a leak-find are rent, not repair. Running the A/C periodically through winter keeps the compressor's seals lubricated - and your defrost quietly does this for you, engaging the A/C to dry the air. And musty air is usually the cabin filter or evaporator, not a mystery.
