What is R-1234yf?
R-1234yf refrigerant was introduced to replace automobile air conditioning refrigerant to reduce negative impact to our environmental. Chemically called 2,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene, HFO-1234yf, it is a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) with the formula CH2=CFCF3. It has a 100-year GWP (global warming potential) lower than 1, compared to its predecessor refrigerant R-134a with 1,430 GWP.
R-134a was originally the replacement for R-12 Freon which was phased out because it is harmful to the ozone layer. Years later, R-134a was found to contribute to global warming so it is now also being phased out.
Most major auto manufacturers have already adopted R-1234yf in several models and the adoption rate is expected to increase. In response to the EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP), American 2021 model year vehicles will no longer be allowed to use R-134a.
