We know that you’re busy. And your “To Do” list is way, way long. But take a moment and think about this: What’s a “To Do” list for someone without a home?
- Where will I sleep?
- Where will I find a bathroom?
- Will I get to eat today?
- Will I get to shower?
We don’t have to make these difficult decisions every day. We consider ourselves fortunate.
On September 22nd, Mayor Garcetti announced that the City of Los Angeles is declaring a state of emergency on homelessness. He has proposed spending at least $100 million in the next year on housing and other services. He has proposed spending at least $100 million in the next year on housing and other services. This is an acknowledgment of how severe the problem has become, and we applaud the city's effort.
However, there has been no actual plan presented, no indication of how it will be funded, and no schedule of when it will be implemented. "Just housing people" still means a tax burden on the people of Los Angeles. This is not a long term solution.
Zoie and I are proud to support Food on Foot, an outstanding 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has helped thousands of homeless, disabled, elderly and low-income adults and children over the last 20 years. Through generous supporters like yourself, Food on Foot is able to:
- Feed an average of 200 homeless and hungry people every Sunday at our meal site.
- Finally, help the Gray Shirts in our Work for Food program find full-time jobs and a place to live.
- Through the Work for Food program, we help turn tax burdens into tax payers. This highly-successful program offers motivated participants a structured pathway to employment and life off the street.
